Summer Reading Program

2010 Program Information:

The Lockport City School District created a Summer Reading Program to help you maintain and strengthen literacy skills. You are encouraged to read age-appropriate books of your own choice for personal enjoyment and reflection.

WHAT IS THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM?

• It’s free to all students entering grades 6 - 12.

• You can read any age-appropriate books.

• You complete a project for each book.

• You must meet with an evaluator in July or August.

HOW DO I EARN POINTS?

You are eligible to earn up to 5 extra points on your 1st quarter English grade:

• For the first book project, you will earn 2 points.

• For the second book project, you will earn 3 additional points.

FOLLOW THESE 3 EASY STEPS

1. Read a book.

2. Complete a project during summer recess.

3. Bring the completed project and the book to the Lockport Public Library to review with an evaluator.

WHAT ARE MY PROJECT CHOICES?

Reading Response Log – Share a personal reflection for each chapter. It may be typed or written.

Tech Project – Create a Power point, timeline or brochure to summarize your book. Bring your tech project on a portable device.

Main Idea Collage – Use poster board for your background. Be sure to use images or objects large enough to be easily seen. Use a minimum of 10 images or objects to represent all or several literary elements.

Poem – Create a poem about the book or a character. Your poem should be at least 20 lines.

Prequel or Sequel – Create a prequel or sequel to the book. Either version must include two main characters in a setting from the book.

Pack a Project – Find a container that represents something unique about the book. Fill the container with at least 10 objects that represent something about the character or story. You may NOT use pictures, drawings or words (objects only).

Editorial Cartoon – Create an editorial cartoon for the story that you have read. The cartoon must contain at least five of the most important characteristics of the story. Be prepared to explain every one of your characteristics in detail.

Diorama – Use a small box (shoebox size) to create a 3-dimensional miniature scene in which characters, animals and objects are arranged in a setting pertaining to the book.

WHERE CAN I GET THE BOOKS?

You will be able to read any book of your choice. Book lists and many age-appropriate titles are available at the Lockport Public Library and online.

WHERE DO I PRESENT MY BOOK PROJECT?

Evaluators will be at the Lockport Public Library in the Community Meeting Room.

WHEN CAN I PRESENT?

You must meet with an evaluator and have a book discussion before any points can be assigned. You will be evaluated on your knowledge of the book, your results will be logged and you will receive a receipt upon your successful completion.

WHAT IF I NEED A LIBRARY CARD?

Your first library card is free of charge. You must present identification that includes your name and current address. You may use a recent report card or a piece of mail that you have received at your home that has your name on it. Parents must sign a form authorizing the issuance of a library card to a child under the age of thirteen. Replacement cards are $1.00. There is no charge for updating information in the database or for renewing expired cards. If you forget your library card, you may check items out with another valid form of identification such as a driver's license.
